About Lisbon or Lisboa – Portugal
The Portuguese capital of Lisbon is the country’s largest city. With a population of over half a million people in the city itself and a further 2.8 million living within its metropolitan boundaries, this accounts for over a quarter of the entire population of Portugal.
In common with most capital cities, Lisbon is hugely important in areas such as finance, commerce, media, entertainment, the arts, education, tourism and international trade. It has one of the largest container ports in Europe and an international airport which handles a throughput of approximately 13 million people a year.
Lisbon’s climate is Subtropical/Mediterranean but mild, courtesy of the Gulf Stream’s North Atlantic Drift. This results in Lisbon experiencing some of the warmest winters on the European Continent. Average temperatures during December through to February are 15°C during the day. This falls to 8-9 °C at night. In the summer, the temperature is on average 25°C during the day and just over 16°C at night.
Lisbon of a summer’s evening is warm, a little sticky and very vibrant. It’s a far cry from the sleepy quiet rural areas of Portugal and a change of pace completely from the tourist beckoning golf resorts on the coast. It is a trendy place where the local fashionista like to hang out. It is a place to see and a place to been seen in.
Cafés and bars are open through to the early hours with some, down by the docks, staying open all night. The Bairro Alto is perhaps the best known area of Lisbon; oozing bohemian charm during the day and pulsing to hedonistic beats at night, it is the cultural centre and a mecca to people of all ages. Fado houses and fine restaurants of every national persuasion vie for tourist trade from behind ornate, if slightly garish, graffiti covered facades and stylish, alternative fashion boutiques, remain open till late in the evening.
