About Norway
Norway is the land of breathtaking fjords, awe inspiring mountains and glaciers but it is perhaps best known, for its phenomenal “northern lights.” The best time to catch this amazing natural display is late autumn and then again late winter into early spring.
Life in the cities of Norway is changing. As the population drifts from country to town and north to south, the major towns and cities are becoming more and more cosmopolitan whilst the outlying areas are being left with very few inhabitants. To address this issue, road tunnels are being created linking Norway’s many small islands with the mainland. Frequent ferries add to the ease of communication, but the divide between country and town, continues to grow.
In response to this trend the Norwegian authorities have introduced measures and incentives to slow the decrease in country population. Farmers are being heavily subsidised and agricultural produce prices are being kept artificially high. These measures are stabilizing the drift and more people are staying on to work the land. Farmers own more than 60% of the Norwegian forests and almost 80% of the forest product is used in the production of timber for house building so it is important that this timber-producing sector remain strong.
With so much stunning countryside in Norway, Norwegians spend a lot of time outdoors, with skiing, hiking, rafting and fishing all being much loved pass times.
