About Porto – Portugal

Portugal’s second largest city and known as “the capital of the north”, Porto is a bustling city of business and commerce by day and a vibrant and colourful place by night. Porto is not short of culture either, there is an impressive line up of historic buildings, monuments and churches that make for some very interesting city tours.

The old quarter is full of charm and character and its cafés and shops are alive with the excited chatter of a people who are it seems, always happy and very welcoming. From busy up market shopping centre to quiet but impressive Cathedral, there is something for everyone in this lovely city and most of it can be seen for less than 15 EUR from the top of an open topped bus.

The city can be accessed very easily via the Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport just 12 miles to the north. This is serviced by the city’s Metro system that transfers you seamlessly and comfortably into the  centre. You won’t tire of the sights on offer here but if you do fancy a change of scene, you can take a short train journey and find yourself in the old quarter of the city, where many Port and wine tours take place.

This old quarter of the city is undergoing thoughtful and sympathetic restoration and as a result, the area has retained and reclaimed much of its medieval feel. Steep, narrow, cobbled streets lined by tall brightly coloured houses, topped with deep red and pink terracotta roof tiles decorate the hillside and make for the most appealing photographs.

These restorations and indeed, many of the improvements that have been made to the area have been put in place since the overthrow of the dictator Salazar and it is great to see that these delightfully quirky parts of Porto are being returned to their former glory.
